Note from Roger on licenses (March 2006):

At last, after two visits to Valencia, many blind alleys and a plethoria of false leads, I can officially confirm (from the horses mouth so to speak) that NO fishing licence is required for shore fishing in the Valencia region. Although in the rest of Spain they are compulsory.

However, BOAT FISHING does require one. It can be bought for 6.77 euros (free if over 60 - take your passport), it lasts 5 years but you must register at Registro de la Direccion Territorial de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentacion, Calle Gregorio Gea 27 (PROP 1) - 46009 Valencia  (Tel: 97 386 6838) - north of the old city just over the other side of the dry river bed.

On the River Jucar, there are no 'day tickets' for the Spanish Angling Federation controlled stretches. In order to fish them you must join an affiliated club - the only British club to qualify in this region is the Alcalali Angling Club (ring Alan Dakin on 696 812 134 for details). However, no Federation licence is required for the picnic site at Sueca or the stretch near the railway bridge at Cullera as these are NOT controlled waters.

The Rio Bullent is also off limits as it is controlled by the Pego Angling Club (Spanish) - I was politely warned off recently, having just caught a 3 kilo Carp! I am now investigating the difficulties of joining this club in order to gain access to this beautiful river.
