GANDIA AREA SOCIAL CLUB (INTERNATIONAL)

Now that we have a brand new Ten-Pin Bowling facility in our area (on the southern outskirts of Gandia) various club members decided to re-activate one of their favourite sports, and go Ten-Pin Bowling on a regular basis as a group activity.

Every month, on the first Monday, the group hires several lanes at the 'La Vital' bowling alley (in La Vital shopping Centre). They play for a couple of hours early in the evening, and sometimes may go off for a meal together or in small groups afterwards in one of the nearby restaurants. The games are played on a purely casual basis - no trophies to win and no competitions to enter and no titles to defend. Although there will be prizes for the highest scoring man and the highest scoring woman.

This is a modern and up-to-date bowling alley, with air conditioning, heating, and onsite bar. There are plenty of lanes and plenty of space to mill around in. Prices work out to just 8 euros per member per session of a couple of games. The price includes shoe hire (you must wear the special shoes provided).

Normal Procedure: A game of ten-pin bowling is divided into ten rounds (called "frames"). In a frame, each player is given two opportunities to knock down the skittle targets (called "pins"). He or she rolls the first ball at the pins. If the first ball knocks down all ten pins, it is called a "strike" and the frame is completed. When pins are left standing after the first ball, those that are knocked down are counted and then removed. Then the player rolls a second ball and if all the remaining pins are knocked down, it is called a "spare."

The ten pins are usually automatically set by machine into four rows which form an equilateral triangle where there are four pins on a side. There are four pins in the back row, then three, then two, and finally one in the front at the center of the lane. The pins are numbered one through ten, starting with one in front, and ending with ten in the back to the right.
